Getting Started with Online Blackjack

by on

To put it to you simply, the casino game of blackjack is incredibly easy to learn and play but much harder to play well. Blackjack has a favorably small house edge, and that edge can be reduced even more by playing with a perfect strategy. It is these two factors—ease of play and positive odds of winning—that make blackjack an incredibly popular casino game. The good news Family Casino wants all of its readers to know is that you don’t have to travel to Las Vegas or Monte Carlo to enjoy the thrills of blackjack. With our handy dandy rules and strategy pages, you could start playing competitive blackjack online as soon as you finish reading our advice!

To begin, you will need a computer with a good internet connection. (Chances are if you’re reading this you've already got both.) Next you’ll want to choose a good casino. You can find more information on selecting the right gambling site for Online Blackjack here at Family Casino. Once your first deposit has been accepted or you’ve set up your fun-only account, you can proceed to the casino page. (If you’re playing for money, remember to enter your sign-up and deposit codes to earn some extra cash.) Most casinos offer a direct link to their blackjack games, though many will have different tables for different variations of the game (like Double Attack, Double Exposure, and Blackjack Switch). You can also choose whether you want to play with other members and a live dealer or sit alone at an automated table.

At the start of each hand, all players will be asked to place their bets. To do this, you will direct the appropriate amount of chips to the betting section of the table using your mouse. The game begins with the dealer placing two cards face up in front of each player and one card face down. Then they give themselves one card face up. These cards are drawn from the traditional 52-card deck. Each number card shares the same value as the number on its face while each face card is worth ten. The Ace may be used as a one or eleven and must be present for you to have a natural blackjack. With that term in mind, it is important to note the point of the game—to get a blackjack of course! More specifically, you want to build a hand that is closer in value to 21 than the dealer’s hand but without going over 21 (also called “going bust”).

To get a “natural” blackjack, you must be dealt an Ace and any card with a value of ten in your initial two cards, but you can still get a 21 with other combinations. If you are happy with the value of your first two cards, you have the option to stand. If the value is too low, you may choose to hit which prompts the dealer to give you another card. You may hit indefinitely until you choose to stand or go bust. If you are dealt two cards of the same value (for example, a pair of Aces), then you also have the option to split. To split you must double your original bet, and then the dealer will separate your cards and deal an additional card to each to create two new hands.

Additionally, you may double down, in which case you double your bet but do not split your cards. Some casinos also have an option called surrender wherein the player folds their hand after the first two cards are dealt and receives half of their original bet back.
