While roulette is—like all other casino games—a game of odds, knowing the odds can help you to make the most of your bankroll. It all begins with the wheel. In European roulette, the wheel is divided into 37 pockets: 18 red, 18 black, and one green. The red and black pockets alternate and are numbered 1 through 36 while the green pocket represents the 0. In American roulette, the wheel is divided into 38 pockets which likewise alternate between red and black but with two green spaces instead of one—one representing 0 and one representing 00.

In the middle of the wheel is a handle that rests on a tilted center. In live roulette, the handle is used to turn the wheel. In Online Roulette, sometimes the wheel is depicted without the handle. The center of the wheel is tilted so that when the ball is released into play, it slides in and out of the pockets. Again, in online roulette this act is purely symbolic. Players can watch the ball roll and bounce just as they would at a real roulette table, but the outcome is ultimately decided by the game’s software.

The roulette wheel is usually at the center or top of the table. The rest of the table is dedicated to the betting layout. Each number on the roulette wheel has a corresponding space on the betting table. Players may make two kinds of bets: inside or outside bets. Inside bets are placed on single specific numbers or certain position-related groupings (like corners and lines). A single bet on a single number is called a “straight up” bet and is made by placing your chips directly on the number’s square. This can be done online by selecting and directing your chips with your mouse.

Your other alternative is to place an outside bet. Outside bets incorporate some of the safest bets at the table, including the popular red/black and odd/even bets. Outside bets also include some position bets like dozens or columns which allow you to bet on up to a third of the wheel’s pockets at once. You may make as many different bets as you’d like—including both inside and outside bets in the same turn—until the croupier (a roulette dealer) determines that enough bets have been made and starts the wheel. If you win, you have four options: claiming your winnings and repeating your bet, increasing your bet with your winnings, changing your bet with or without the use of your winnings, or taking your winnings and leaving the table. In online roulette, any wins will automatically be credited to your stack and ultimately to your member account.

Be wary of online scams that will try to sell you complex roulette playing or betting strategies. The best strategies are the simplest ones. While many players enjoy betting straight up on numbers with personal significance, these bets often have the worst odds. Most beginners would do well to stick to outside bets like red/black, high/low or odd/even.
